You Don’t Have to Be Skinny to Learn How to Pole Dance
Pole dancing is for strippers.
Pole dancing is just for men’s entertainment.
Pole dancing means wearing skimpy clothing.
There are an awful lot of beliefs about pole dancing that simply aren’t true, but the biggest myth
surrounding pole dancing is that only skinny girls can work a pole. I’m here to tell you that simply isn’t
No matter what your size, pole dancing can help you lose weight, build lean muscle, all while helping
you get back in touch with your feminine side.
But, if you’re overweight, there are probably a few concerns you have about giving pole dancing a try.
Hopefully, after you’re done reading this article, you’ll be ready to sign up for a Pole4Curves class!
Can a pole hold my weight?
One concern that many curvy girls have about giving pole dancing a try is whether or not the pole will
hold their weight. After all, crashing to the floor in the middle of practice isn’t going to be good for your
body or your self-esteem.
A professional pole dancing studio will have poles that are safe for nearly any weight, and your
instructor won’t allow you to use a pole that isn’t safe for you. But, what if you want to practice at
home? How do you know if a pole is safe when you install it yourself?
There are a few things you’ll want to consider when purchasing a pole:
Thickness of the pole
Diameter of the pole
One piece or multi-piece pole
In general, the thicker and larger the diameter, the stronger the pole. If you want more advice, a pole
dancing professional can answer all of your questions.
Do I have to wear skimpy clothing?
Pole dancers are known for wearing very little clothing. Whether you picture skimpy sequined bikinis or
sports bras, neither option is very appealing if you’re overweight. Although many pole professionals
prefer wearing less, it’s all about finding what’s comfortable for you.
In the beginning, you may feel more comfortable in functional fitness clothing that you would most
commonly see at the gym. As you become more confident in your abilities, you may get brave enough to
give something a bit sexier a try.
No matter what your style, you should avoid overly baggy clothing and long sleeves. Extra fabric can get
in the way when spinning or inverting, which is both frustrating and unsafe.
Do I have to have a lot of upper body strength when I begin pole dancing?
Even basic spinning techniques require quite a bit of upper body strength. This can be intimidating if you
have weak upper body muscles. The good news is, you don’t have to spend time in the gym working on
your arms, back, shoulders, and chest before you visit a pole dancing studio.
Most pole dancing studios incorporate a wide variety of strength building exercises, drills, and additional
classes to help you build muscle so you can try new tricks on the pole. Even if you’ve never worked out
before, classes are catered to your fitness level, so everyone can enjoy some success.
Won’t I get made fun of?
After considering safety and fitness, many girls get worried about whether they’ll be judged when they
visit a pole dancing studio. Here at World of Pole, we have a special class that’s made just for curvy girls
